EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The present directory represents a joint work of FiBL, Swiss and CIMS, Costa Rica. The process of elaboration began in February of 2005 and ended in September 2005. During the process the two institutions identified more than 550 wholesale, importing and processing companies of certified organic and fairtrade products of Canada, United States, Swiss and Union European. With in this process, FiBL collected the data of Europe, while CIMS was responsible for Canada and United States.
The companies were identified mainly through secondary literature, directories and personal contacts. To complement and to verify the quality of the collected data multiple calls were made to the previously identified companies.
Following is the information collected for the majority of the companies:

• Information on the business: activity to which is dedicated and general observations.

• Information of contact: name, telephone, fax, email, web page and physical address.
• Information on the product and type of processing.
• Information on the certification: standard, certification and the agency that emits the certification.
