EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

United States at present is an excellent market for the conventional fresh avocado. The internal consumption has enlarged; in the 2004 the importing reaches 467 thousand tons. During this same year Chile, Mexico and Dominican Republic contributed with the 90% of the imparting.
According to CIMS, in the United States the market for organic products continues with it growth rate and among these the avocado reach the 5% of the total market during the 2004, but in spite of its good offering still does not satisfy the demand which elevates the cost.
the American Market. In turn the producers of organic avocado certify the product in order to reach the overpricing, although the benefit is recognized alone to the exporters. Mexico is among the importers, but still its impact has not been measured.

Central America has the conditions for the production of avocado, but due to the fact that the entry to the American market is seen hindered by phytosanitary demands the region is dedicated to the importing of Mexican fruits. Nevertheless, since this fruit offers the possibility of transformation, these countries can process it and this way surpass the sanitary limitation imposed.
